Love cocktails? Do you try to make them at home, and they just don’t turn out as good as the cocktail the bartender served to you last night? What is the secret? Well, obviously talent and years of expertise has propelled the bartender to the top , but what else? What is it that makes their cocktails a little more special. In my opinion, there are two factors (aside from knowledge and skill) that set a bartender’s drinks apart from home cocktails: fresh Juices and simple syrup.
Fresh juices are important, but it is the simple syrup I am talking about. It’s an often overlooked ingredient that we seldom think to use at home for what ever reason – be it time, knowledge, or desire to take the extra leap. Too hard?!? No. The irony is that it is so simple to make! The rule of thumb is one part liquid and one part sugar. Simple! Hence the name.
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- Boil both ingredients until the sugar dissolves. Usually 3-4 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let it cool.
- If refrigerated, it can last a month or two!

Here is another simple syrup recipe identical to the one I listed above.
